Artificial Intelligence (AI) (What is it?):

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in simplest terms is a program/app that can learn patterns from lots of information (mostly on the internet) and then use those patterns to do useful things.  It's very good at spotting patterns and making quick decisions based on what it's seen before.  For example, most of us use SIRI or Alexa voice assistants, right?  SIRI and Alexa hear your voice commands and then translates what you are asking, then gives you its best answer.  If you don't agree with the answer, you can ask a follow-up question to better narrow down the details.  Not only is this learning from your questions, but it is also learning your voice and improving its understanding.  AI is ALWAYS learning and trying to improve your experience.

What are some AI Examples for Everyday Users, you might ask?

  • Autocorrect on Your Phone
When you're typing a message and your phone fixes "teh" to "the" or suggests the next word, that's AI at work.
It has seen billions of text messages and books, so it knows common spelling mistakes and what words usually come next. It guesses what you meant and helps fix it.
  • Netflix or YouTube recommendations: "You watched a funny cat video, so here are more cat videos." AI noticed what you liked before and finds similar stuff.  It's like a movie-obsessed friend who notices you binge-watched three superhero films and immediately shouts, "Hey, you'll love this new Spider-Man knockoff!"
  • Google Photos finding pictures: You search "beach photos," and it shows all your beach pictures—even if you never labeled them. AI learned what sandy shores, ocean waves, and sunburned smiles look like from millions of other photos.
  • Spam email filter: Your email automatically puts junk mail in the spam folder. AI learned from millions of emails what spam usually looks like (lots of exclamation marks, promises of money, etc.).  Think of a bouncer at a club who's seen every shady character trying to sneak in. When an email screams "You've won a million dollars!!! Click here!!!" the bouncer (AI) recognizes the classic scam outfit and tosses it straight into the spam VIP room.

  • Summary:
It doesn't truly "understand" like you or I do (no emotions, no real thoughts), but it's incredible at spotting patterns and making smart guesses based on what it's practiced a zillion times. It's quietly helping us out every single day, making life a little easier and more fun!
