Two Factor Authentication (What is it?):

Technology Tricks Two Factor Image

What is two factor authentication and why is it important for the everyday user?  Two factor (also called Multi Factor) is a simple term to describe adding a 2nd layer of security, making it much harder for attackers to access your account even if they have your password.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a security process that requires
two different types of credentials before granting access:
  • Something you know – Your password or PIN.
  • Something you have – A phone, authenticator app, or hardware key.
  • Something you are – Biometrics like fingerprints or facial recognition.

Think of it like a locked door that needs two keys....even if someone steals one, they can’t get in without the other.

How to Enable 2FA on Popular Platforms:

  • Google: Go to myaccount.google.com → Security → 2-Step Verification → Follow prompts.
  • Facebook: Settings & Privacy → Security and Login → Two-Factor Authentication → Choose SMS or app Facebook Instructions.
  • Twitter: Settings → Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Select SMS, authentication app, or security key.
  • Microsoft: Account Settings → Security → More Security Options → Enable 2FA Instructions Here.
  • Apple:  In the Settings App under your name  → Sign-in and Security  More Info Here
Most major banks and financial sites will have this feature in the Settings (look for two factor or multi-factor) and set it up the next time you visit the site.  This is one of the most important security features you can do to protect your account and save you from identity theft, financial loss, and countless headaches.  Please do this, you will be thankful you did!
